Browsing the Web

I decieded to test out my pinterst and I put together a board of pictures that correalates with our Chapter Two Browsing the Web.

Personal Learning Network

This was my first time creating a personal learning network. First, I joined Linkedin and I plan to use it to meet professionals in the third sector.

Next, I searched out blogs that would give me insight to non-for-profit management, fundraising, and social issues.

I have been a member of twitter, facebook and pintrest for quiet some time, however, now I plan to use them professionally. I recently started following Barak Obama and Buffalo's Mayor Byron Brown on Twitter to help keep track of social issues.

To showcase my personal network I found free mind which allowed me to keep track of my progress developing my personal network. It was not very user friendly, but with time and effort, I have figured it out.

Please offer any insight you have on developing a personal netowrk. Also, if you know of a better mind mapping tool, please share.

Net Neutrality

I would never want to imagine a world where I would not be able to access google via my mobile web. First, I currently pay too much for my wireless service as it is.  You are probably thinking to yourself, well, that's your choice.

Let me explain a few things...

I use my cell phone more that I use my laptop to access the web. I mean, I always have it on me and it is so much more convenient for the following reasons:

 1. I don't have to plug in my laptop,
2. Turn it on
3. Sign in
4. Wait for it to load

Yes, I have fallen victim to our "right here, right now" society !

Since we now know that I am impaitent, Not having serivice will and can not ever be an option. I must have all bars at all time and google has to be accesible. You see, I have a very curious six year old second grader who asks questions like,
"Mom, how many species live on the Great Barrier Reef." Chances are he already knows the answer because he is an avid reader, but he wants to see how smart his mommy is, since I always reply before the answer, "Mommies know everything" LOL. Well, little does he know, mommy googles her answer and that way I always look like a genius to my big boy.

GOOGLE IS MY CHOICE, keywords, MY CHOICE, to obtain information!

So I choose Verizon and I pay them a fortune because they have the most towers and I can be all the way in Timbuktu and I will have service. Guranteed.

Therefore, if Verizon decided to negotiate an expensive contract with say Bing and slowed down service on my beloved google I would be irate.

I pay for Verizon for a service and the freedom to access whichever site at the 4g LTE speed that I was guranteed at the time I renewed my contract. I am a capable adult and for anyone to choose what information I can and can not access is taking aways my ability to make decisions for myself.

So you may ask yourself, Candice, what exactly are speaking to? I am speaking to net neutrality. The definition given online states internet service providers shouldn't be allowed to block, degrade, or charge extra for legal content and applications that run on the NET.

What are your thoughts on net neutrality? How can we regulate the internet without any hidden agendas so that all parties involved act in the consumers best interest?

Blog Bete Noire

Nothing irritates me more than searching for information and the results are a blog. Reason being are most results lack useful information, are hard to read, and are over personalized.

TRUTH IS....

When blogging you have to keep in mind your audience. I would ask my self what information am I trying to convey? Or what does my blog mean to me?

DO NOT....

Over personalize. People can learn a lot from shared experiences, but you don't want it so personal that they can't relate or respond. Blogging should be interactive and you want to be engaged with your audience.

PLEASE...

Make sure your work is easy to read. Nothing is worse than an awful color scheme or not enough space between thoughts. You do want people to read the blog in it's entirety, right?

GET INVOLVED....

LINK! LINK! LINK! AND LINK! Get other blogger's involved or share sites that you used information from.

LAST, BUT NOT LEAST...

Stay involved and post regularly. Do not get discouraged if you do not receive a large quantity of hits or people are not leaving comments. Instead, stay true to your goal, and keep your audience engaged.

ONE MORE THING...

Have fun. Remain professional. And listen to your audience, just because they may not agree with your thoughts, does not mean you are wrong, they are just offering a different perspective.

After one lesson in web 2.0 tool on blogging I found several solutions to my dislikes of blogs. Now, I know what separates an experienced blogger from a novice.

What are your blogging pet peeves and what solutions can you offer other blogger's like you?
